Hand-colored engraving of a still life painting by Nicholas Robert (1614-1685), who is considered one of the most important European botanical artists. While the actual painting was created around 1673, this copper engraving was made in the 19th century by a London publisher. It is printed on a beige-tone matte paper, which serves as a beautiful background to the deep colors of the pictured flowers in a vase.
Please note that paper has some age-related discoloration spots (see pictures). The engraving is covered with glass and set in an off-white wooden frame which shows some wear.
The engraving has a number of inscriptions and signs, typical of those printed in Britain. The lower left area near the bottom of the vase has the inscription 'N. Robert del et sculp,' which indicates that the engraving is done after the work of N. Robert. On the opposite side, the inscription says 'avec priv del roy,' which means 'with the permission of the king' - a typical mark on objects containing the royal seal. The bottom of the vase marked 'B.R.' with the crown sitting above it. This mark indicates that the stamped object was made according to the British royalty standard of quality.
