Anh-Van Truong's unique art highlights her unusual life story. Born in Vietnam in 1952, she studied literature and fine arts in France. Having returned to Vietnam after her studies, she was forced to escape to the Philippines soon after the revolution, where she lived in a refugee camp. A citizen of the world, Anh-Van resettled in Canada and later in the U.S., but she continued to travel through Europe, Asia and Australia extensively. But nostalgia for her lost home in Vietnam never let go, and she began putting her feelings and thoughts into her paintings. While Truong's art features vibrant impressionist colors and is full of life, it also has an element of sadness and melancholy. This underlying contrast assigns a haunting beauty to her work. This is how the artist describes her art: 'It seems that I always tried to search for an invisible paradise where I could grab and hold tightly in my hand with the nostalgia of a long time dead past: my lost home where I grew up with my parents and family.... when I finally set my first brush stroke and splash of color on the canvas, I realized that I finally found my way home again.'
